UC Davis Mental Health App
about the app
Students struggling with their mental health often have a hard time seeking resources and finding someone to talk to. New students have an especially hard time, because, in order to seek help they must first discover and navigate their resources.
I created an app that allows students to easily chat with mental health providers on campus, schedule appointments, and connect with other students. Not only does this app provide students with an easier path to resources, it ensures that students are aquatinted with the system BEFORE they need it.
Research
I conducted interviews with various UC Davis students and alumni in order to gain a better understanding of the problem space. The biggest thing that I kept hearing interviewees say is that they were unaware of the resources that they had available to them, or, that they had given up because accessing the resources was confusing and difficult. I realized that in order for students to utilize mental health resources when they need it, they must first be, not only aware, but aquatinted with them.
implementing my findings
In order to help students get aquatinted with the campus counselors, resources, and appointment scheduling process, I created an interactive checklist. When students first log into the app they are provided with this list and prompted to begin completing the steps. This addition to my app aids students by showing them what they need to do in a clear and direct way.
